Gamma-Glutamyl Transpeptidases: Structure and Function

Gamma-Glutamyl Transpeptidases: Structure and Function by Immacolata Castellano , Antonello Merlino
English | PDF | 2013 | 65 Pages | ISBN : 3034806817 | 4.7 MB

Gamma-Glutamyl Transpeptidases (γ-GTs) are members of the N-terminal nucleophile hydrolase superfamily, enzymes that cleave the γ-glutamyl amide bond of glutathione to liberate cysteinylglycine. The released γ-glutamyl group can be transferred to water (hydrolysis) or to amino acids or short peptides (transpeptidation). γ-GT plays a key role in the gamma glutamyl cycle by regulating the cellular levels of the antioxidant glutathione, hence it is a critical enzyme in maintaining cellular redox homeostasis.γ-GT is upregulated during inflammation and in several human tumors, and it is involved in many physiological disorders related to oxidative stress, such as Parkinson’s disease and diabetes.

Sustainable Production of Biofuels Using Intensified Processes

Sustainable Production of Biofuels Using Intensified Processes by Juan Gabriel Segovia-Hernández, Eduardo Sanchez-Ramirez, Heriberto Alcocer-Garcia, Ana Gabriela Romero-Garcia, Juan José Quiroz-Ramirez
English | PDF,EPUB | 2022 | 216 Pages | ISBn : 3031132157 | 25.8 MB

This book includes for first time the synthesis and intensified process design in the production of top biofuels. The production of biofuels is not new. In 2019, global biofuel production levels reached 1,841 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day, in stark comparison to the 187 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day that was produced in 2000. Growth has largely been driven by policies that encourage the use and production of biofuels due to the perception that it could provide energy security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in relevant sectors.

Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion: An Engineering Insight by Reza Javaherdashti
English | PDF | 2017 | 228 Pages | ISBN : 3319443046 | 6.3 MB

Significantly extended from the first edition, this book presents the basics of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) in an accessible and concise manner. It explores strategies for recognizing, understanding, mitigating and preventing this type of corrosion, and investigates this topic from the point of view of an engineer. Chapters cover issues including stress corrosion cracking and microbial corrosion, the pros and cons of biocides, the involvement of magnetic bacteria in microbial corrosion, and cathodic protection based on recent research in microbial environments. The 2nd Edition provides new material examining the following topics:

Point-of-Care Solution for Osteoporosis Management: Design, Fabrication, and Validation of New Technology by Patricia Khashayar
English | PDF | 2017 | 212 Pages | ISBN : 3319550527 | 6.5 MB

This book addresses the important clinical problem of accurately diagnosing osteoporosis, and analyzes how Bone Turnover Markers (BTMs) can improve osteoporosis detection. In her research, the author integrated microfluidic technology with electrochemical sensing to embody a reaction/detection chamber to measure serum levels of different biomarkers, creating a microfluidic proteomic platform that can easily be translated into a biomarker diagnostic. The Osteokit System, a result of the integration of electrochemical system and microfluidic chips, is a unique design that offers the potential for greater sensitivity. The implementation, feasibility, and specificity of the Osteokit platform is demonstrated in this book, which is appropriate for researchers working on bone biology and mechanics, as well as clinicians.

Bioenergy and Biochemical Processing Technologies: Recent Advances and Future Demands by Augustine O. Ayeni
English | EPUB | 2022 | 393 Pages | ISBN : 3030967204 | 31.6 MB

This book presents novel techniques, current trends, and cutting-edge technologies in energy and biochemical processes. The authors explore recent advances that solve challenges related to the implications and commercialization of these processes by introducing new techniques or modifying existing technologies to meet future demands for food materials, bioproducts, fossil fuels, biofuels, and bioenergy. Divided into three parts, the first section of the book addresses issues related to the utilization and management of energy towards the efficient characterization and conversion of wastes or raw-/bio- materials to useful products. The second section focuses largely on studies on molecular detection of analytes, purification, and characterization of products recovered from biochemical, enzymatic, food, and phytochemicals, as well as biostimulation and bioaugmentation processes. The final section discusses areas related to heat and mass transfer, fuel processing technologies, nanofluids, and their applications.

Spectroscopic and Mechanistic Studies of Dinuclear Metallohydrolases and Their Biomimetic Complexes by Lena Josefine Daumann
English | PDF | 2014 | 253 Pages | ISBN : 3319066285 | 10.9 MB

Lena Daumanns's thesis describes structural and functional studies of the enzyme Glycerophosphodiesterase (GpdQ) from Enterobacter aerogenes. It also examines the properties of small mimics of this enzyme and related binuclear metallohydrolases such as the metallo-ß-lactamases to enhance our understanding of hydrolytic cleavage of important substrates like phosphoesters and β-lactams.

Artificial Organ Engineering by Maria Cristina Annesini
English | PDF | 2017 | 271 Pages | ISBN : 1447164423 | 6.6 MB

Artificial organs may be considered as small-scale process plants, in which heat, mass and momentum transfer operations and, possibly, chemical transformations are carried out. This book proposes a novel analysis of artificial organs based on the typical bottom-up approach used in process engineering. Starting from a description of the fundamental physico-chemical phenomena involved in the process, the whole system is rebuilt as an interconnected ensemble of elemental unit operations.
