Statistical and Inductive Inference by Minimum Message Length by C.S. Wallace

My thanks are due to the many people who have assisted in the work reported here and in the preparation of this book. The work is incomplete and this account of it rougher than it might be. Such virtues as it has owe much to others; the faults are all mine. My workle ading to this book began when David Boulton and I attempted to develop a method for intrinsic classi?cation. Given data on a sample from some population, we aimed to discover whether the population should be considered to be a mixture of di?erent types, classes or species of thing, and, if so, how many classes were present, what each class looked like, and which things in the sample belonged to which class. I saw the problem as one of Bayesian inference, but with prior probability densities replaced by discrete probabilities re?ecting the precision to which the data would allow parameters to be estimated. Boulton, however, proposed that a classi?cation of the sample was a way of brie?y encoding the data: once each class was described and each thing assigned to a class, the data for a thing would be partially implied by the characteristics of its class, and hence require little further description. After some weeks’ arguing our cases, we decided on the maths for each approach, and soon discovered they gave essentially the same results. Without Boulton’s insight, we may never have made the connection between inference and brief encoding, which is the heart of this work.

Mathematical Fuzzy Logic in the Emerging Fields of Engineering, Finance, and Computer Sciences

Mathematical Fuzzy Logic in the Emerging Fields of Engineering, Finance, and Computer Sciences by Amit K. Shukla
English | PDF | 2023 | 252 Pages | ISBN : 3036559361 | 17.1 MB

Mathematical fuzzy logic (MFL) specifically targets many-valued logic and has significantly contributed to the logical foundations of fuzzy set theory (FST). It explores the computational and philosophical rationale behind the uncertainty due to imprecision in the backdrop of traditional mathematical logic. Since uncertainty is present in almost every real-world application, it is essential to develop novel approaches and tools for efficient processing.

Intelligent and Soft Computing in Infrastructure Systems Engineering: Recent Advances

Intelligent and Soft Computing in Infrastructure Systems Engineering: Recent Advances by Kasthurirangan Gopalakrishnan, Halil Ceylan, Nii O. Attoh-Okine
English | PDF(True) | 2009 | 330 Pages | ISBN : 3642045855 | 13.6 MB

The term “soft computing” applies to variants of and combinations under the four broad categories of evolutionary computing, neural networks, fuzzy logic, and Bayesian statistics. Although each one has its separate strengths, the complem- tary nature of these techniques when used in combination (hybrid) makes them a powerful alternative for solving complex problems where conventional mat- matical methods fail. The use of intelligent and soft computing techniques in the field of geo- chanical and pavement engineering has steadily increased over the past decade owing to their ability to admit approximate reasoning, imprecision, uncertainty and partial truth. Since real-life infrastructure engineering decisions are made in ambiguous environments that require human expertise, the application of soft computing techniques has been an attractive option in pavement and geomecha- cal modeling.
