Bridge of Sighs, Robin Trower's sophomore album following his departure from Procol Harum. Lauded critically, commercially a breakthrough, the album saw Robin push his trio's initial concept into exciting new territory. Accompanied by James Dewar on soulful vocal and bass duty and Reg Isidore underpinning their psychedelic blues sound with masterful drumming. Producer and former Procol Harum bandmate Matthew Fisher and Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick take on control room duties to help bring this stunning collection of songs together. This 3CD/1Bluray expanded 50th anniversary edition contains the original remastered album, along with a newly mixed version of the album in Stereo and Atmos. These are unedited versions of tracks from the album, which were originally edited down to fit a side of a vinyl and presented here in full for the first time. Added to this, there are a selection of previously unreleased outtakes and alternative versions and a full live concert from the Record Plant in 1974 across 2 CDs. The Blu-ray contains the full 2024 Unedited Atmos version of the album, hi-res 96/24 version of the original 1974 mix, an instrumental version of the album, Record Plant 1974 and additional outtakes not featured on the CDs. The first two albums by UFO featured an odd mix of crisp, focussed songs alternating with meandering electric guitar-led soundscapes. Flying starts off with perhaps their best of the former category, "Silver Bird." This story of a primitive islander seeing an airplane for the first time begins with a pleasant little acoustic guitar melody and builds into a soaring full-band musical expression of the wonder of flight. The next cut, all 19 minutes of it, conjures up the vaster expanses of space. To complain that "Star Storm" rambles is to miss the point; sometimes Michael Bolton's guitar is used as a pure sound effect rather than to convey any kind of rhythm or melody, and if you're patient, then listening can be an enjoyable, even absorbing, experience…

Trapeze were an English rock band formed in March 1969, by vocalist John Jones and guitarist/keyboardist Terry Rowley (who named the band), with guitarist Mel Galley, singer/bassist Glenn Hughes, and drummer Dave Holland. The band had a fairly fluid line up, finally dissolving in 1994, and although they never found commercial success themselves, several members went on to join better known bands, including Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, Judas Priest, and Uriah Heep. The core and most familiar line-up of the band was Glenn Hughes, Mel Galley, and Dave Holland. After Glenn Hughes' departure in June 1973, Galley and Holland kept the band together with constantly varying members until 1979, when Holland went on to join Judas Priest. Holland tried to revive the band in 1990, after leaving Priest, but the band finally broke up in 1994. Their first three albums remain their best known and most commercially successful.

Tommi Gunn were a band active on the Sunset Strip at the end of the 1980s that can be partially compared with competitors such as Pretty Boy Floy, Warrant, Poison and Tuff. It wasn't enough for the big deal back then, but that couldn't have been due to the really appealing material on "Talk Of The Town". It offers catchy, sleazy melodic rock that was very popular at the time. Hair metal! The production is also appealing. A great addition to the collection for fans of the bands mentioned above! (BS)

Stop me if you have heard this. It’s 1987. Hollywood, with its style and sounds, is exploding. Five California kids… and a guy from Alabama… working in various bands come together with a shared dream - making it big on the Sunset Strip with their band, RARE TOUCH! Five guys, busting their asses on the stages of The Roxy, The Whisky, Gazzarri’s, and The Troubadour. Five musicians, following the path of their Hollywood heroes, shared the bill with bands such as Julliet, Southgang, Harlot, and many others who were pursuing the same dream. Five guys walking the streets of Hollywood, plastering posters and flyers anywhere they would stick and be seen, hustling to sell tickets to fill the clubs, to make themselves seen and heard. Five guys trying to keep that dream alive in any way possible…

No one, least of all Deep Purple themselves, expected the success of 2013's Now What?! It placed at number one on four European album charts and in the Top Ten of six other countries. It also sold exceptionally well: It was certified Gold in Poland, Germany (where it sold over 100,000), the Czech Republic, and Russia – it was the band's first album to crack the U.K.'s Top 40 charts in 20 years. For InFinite, Deep Purple re-enlisted producer Bob Ezrin. At this point, he is almost a sixth member. This the longest running lineup in their history. InFinite is a heavier and more expansive record than its predecessor, but it's not as consistent. Ian Gillian is in excellent form – still possessing intense expressive power and range, his falsetto remains intact four decades on. Don Airey's organ and keys – so elemental in DP's musical architecture – is physical, atmospheric, and dynamic.

Seven Tears finds Golden Earring continuing to develop its distinctive blend of hard rock and prog elements, but the end result is not as consistent as 1970's Golden Earring. The big problem this time out is that the group's adventurous genre-hopping tendencies don't always result in strong songs: "Silver Ships" is a soft, science fiction-influenced song that generates a potent atmosphere but lacks the strong arrangement and sense of dynamics that would allow it to take flight, and "You're Better Off Free" loses sight of its catchy tune with a lengthy midsection guitar jam that derails an otherwise interesting song.

Heavy Metal Review by Bret Adams
The title Heavy Metal is somewhat misleading. Sure, this terrific soundtrack from the 1981 animated cult favorite features heavy metal and hard rock numbers. But the title refers to National Lampoon's sci-fi/fantasy magazine on which the film is based. Musically, Heavy Metal offers more than the title suggests, and the songs fit perfectly with their respective film segments. Heavy Metal was originally a double album, but at 62 minutes it fits just fine on one CD. Sixteen songs are contributed by Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Devo, Donald Fagen, Don Felder, Grand Funk Railroad, Sammy Hagar, Journey, Nazareth, Stevie Nicks, Riggs, and Trust; Cheap Trick, Felder, and Riggs each provide two.

17th May will see the release of Lucassen & Soeterboek's Plan Nine album 'The Long-Lost Songs' via Music Theories Recordings / Mascot Label Group. It was the early nineties, and musical polymath Arjen Lucassen had begun working on several projects: a solo album, a progressive-rock opera and a rock album. Around this time, he watched singer Robert Soeterboek perform live with Bodine, his former early-eighties heavy metal band. "His vocals truly impressed me, a rarity!" Lucassen recalls. "He had the charisma and power of singers like David Coverdale and Robert Plant. Discovering that we really got along personally, we decided to collaborate on some songs, just for fun."

In 1989 big line-up changes occurred within Dio. Guitarist Craig Goldy was replaced by 19-year-old Rowan Robertson; keyboardist Clive Schnell - in the group since 1983 – gave way to Jens Johannsen; founding bassist Jimmy Bain left and the role was filled by Teddy Cook; and most surprising of all, Ronnie’s old mate from Black Sabbath, VinNy Appice, went, with former AC/DC drummer Simon Wright filling his shoes. But, after a brief Sabbath re-union in 1993, which saw the album Dehumaniser released, Appice came back, alongside more new members: guitarist Tracy G, keyboardist Scott Warren of Warrant and bassist Jeff Pilson of Dokken. During this era, the band abandoned fantasy themed songs and focused on modern issues As a result, some fans regard the albums made during this period – notably 1993's Strange Highways - as somewhat lacking, while the majority view them positively, as a step away from the outdated sound of the 1980s. While out touring and promoting Strange Highways, Dio performed at The Edge in Palo Alto, California on October 2nd, 1994. Putting on a solid and hugely enjoyable show, the entire event was recorded for live radio broadcast along the West Coast.
